Since 1 January 2012, it is possible to secure loans with a registered debt instrument ("Register-Schuldbrief", "cédule hypothécaire de registre"), which offers an alternative to the long-established mortgage certificate on paper. As with all novelties, this new instrument provides an opportunity for new considerations and raises questions, which your Notary public will be keen to answer.
